Hey everyone. Today I’d like to welcome back Harmony Kent to my site. She has a new book coming up for release soon and is here to talk about it.
Thanks so much for having me over at your place today, Joan.
Hi everyone. It’s great to be visiting with you all.
While I’m here, I’d like to talk about my latest book, Interludes 2. This is a book of short erotic romance fiction. As with the original Interludes (which you can find HERE), the book contains 10 short stories, with the first tale totaling 1,000 words, the second one totaling 2,000, and so on up to 10,000 words in the final story.
For each story, I used prompt cards from a great creative tool called Storymatic. Here’s what the set gave me to work with:
- person who can’t remember an important word, b) hypochondriac … c) runaway … conflict = wig
A and B relate to the main character. C relates to the secondary character. And the final prompt gives us the conflict.
From the above set of prompts, I came up with Wigging Out—a contemporary romance in 1000 words.
Two strangers. A crowded platform. A collision. And a wig on the floor.
Excerpt from Wigging Out:
Well?’ she demanded with a strong Polish accent.
Dan stared. ‘Sorry?’
Her eyes glinted. ‘That’s better.’
No, he hadn’t meant that as an apology. ‘Hey, wait. You ran into me.’
The woman rolled her eyes. ‘You were the one standing there, panicking over nothing.’ Her gaze flicked to his floppy embarrassment on the floor.
With his jaw clenched, Dan fought off a sudden flush. Why couldn’t he have lost his hair gracefully, instead of in useless tufts? Honestly, he looked like some clown from CBeebies.
They both stood staring at the wig. Inexorably, the hairpiece drew their gazes like a paused porn flick. The woman crouched and reached out to retrieve what the hospital so unimaginatively called a prosthetic. Dainty fingers held it out to Dan. Wordless, and just wanting to get out of there, he took it.
‘Thanks,’ he mumbled while tense fingers scrunched up the wig and crushed it in a fist.
At the same time, they each asked the other a question …
From him, ‘So, why were you running like that?’
From her, ‘What’s with wig?’
They stopped talking, stared, and then laughed. Dan shoved the squashed hairpiece into his front pocket, and immediately regretted the action. Most probably, it made a ridiculous bulge.
His companion cast a nervous glance over her shoulder. Commuters thronged the concourse. As far as Dan could see, threats could lurk anywhere. He stepped forward and cupped her elbow. ‘Is someone after you?’
At his touch, she stiffened and gave him a jerky nod. Dan made an uncharacteristic split-second decision. ‘Come with me.’
I had so much fun writing this one, and I hope you’ve enjoyed this little teaser. I’d love to hear what you think via the comments at the bottom of the page. Thanks for stopping by.

Harmony did a great job, didn’t she? Thank for stopping by, Jan.
It probably helps being one of those folks that if things can go wrong for, they will! lols. Thanks so much for your pre-order and your support, Jan 🙂
It really is intriguing how you come up with your ideas. I have been practicing thinking of specific ideas within a prompt. I guess practice makes perfect, but I take my hat off to you.
For sure, I’ve found it gets much easier with practice. A great game to play (if you have the time, lols) is to take one prompt and write a short piece for one genre, then go back and write from the same prompt for a totally different genre. It amazes me how many different tracks my muse can go down when I do this. Thanks so much for your lovely words and support, Robbie 🙂
My pleasure, Harmony. My mind always goes to dark – ghosts and the supernatural.
Harmony did a great job. I’m not sure I could do that well with prompts.
I agree. I’m not sure if I could either.
