Hey, everyone. I can’t believe the last time I posted anything other than having a guest was in January. Where does time go?
First of all, I’d like to update you on my cancer journey. The tumor has shrunk to almost half the size it originally was and my cancer antigen has decreased. Some of you have followed my journey on Caring Bridge, but I rarely post more than once a month. Anyhow, I’m feeling great, and the femur has healed completely.
Now, for the “big” news. After almost a year, I’m doing the final edits of Blood Red Dawn, the second full-length novel in my Legends of Madeira series. I plan to publish it on October 30 and hope to have it available for pre-order in the next couple of weeks.
Subscribers to my newsletter have already seen this, but I’m happy to share the cover reveal with you today.
Blurb:
Connected by the past. Torn by the present.
Honorably discharged, former Navy SEAL Connor Hughes returned to Madeira, New Mexico to start the next phase of his life. Now he owns a shooting range and volunteers with a veteransβ support group. Heβs even overcome a misunderstanding with his high school sweetheart and has begun to mend those broken fences.
Abbey Laneβs gift of premonition once drove Connor away, and since theyβve reconnected, sheβs sworn to not make the same mistake twice. When she learns the tragic tale of a young couple whose happiness was destroyed in the 1870sβa couple with whom she and Connor share uncanny similaritiesβshe fears she may not be able to keep her vow.
Connorβs emotional baggage swamps him with doubts. As he wrestles with past demons, unable to leave the horrors of battle behind, someone bent on revenge emerges to destroy him. Abbeyβs giftβa skill he once deniedβmay be the only clue he has.
And the only way to keep them both safe.
I’m excited to finally get this book finished and published. Even though I haven’t been writing a lot in the past few months, ideas are again churning in my head. I’d debated on writing the third and final Legends novel and had actually decided to end the series with this one. However, last week I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t go back to sleep (a rarity for me). While lying there, I thought of how I wanted to write Edge of Twilight. So, Lord willing, there will be a third Legends book.
I’ll post again when I get the pre-order link, and I apologize for my long absence.

Great news, Joan! I’m so glad to hear that you’re feeling better. And a new book to boot!
Thank you so much, Pete. When I retired, I didn’t sign up for cancer, but it’s the path of life I’m on now. I choose to be positive and not let it get me down.
Congratulations on the great news, that the cancer is shrinking and your upcoming book. The cover is very red, but it looks good and stands out.
Thank you, Thomas. Yep, I wanted something red, and I think I achieved that. LOL. I appreciate your support.
Yes, if I saw the cover on Amazon as I was scrolling by, I would click on it to check it out further. It stands out.
Thanks! That means a lot. I’m one of those readers who does judge a book by its cover. π
You shouldn’t, but we do
Striking cover and great book description. I look forward to reading this next installment in the Legends of Madeira series!
Thank you so much, Priscilla.
The cover is perfect! So glad you are feeling better. Hugs coming your way!
Thank you, Darlene. I’m blessed not to have severe side-effects from the treatment. I appreciate the hug.
Iβm so glad youβre doing so well. Congrats on the upcoming book.
Thank you so much, Craig. I appreciate your friendship and support.
I’m so glad there has been some improvements! I love the book cover! ππ𧑠Congratulations on your new book.
Thank you so much, Kymber.
Fabulous news on all fronts. Great blurb, great cover, and greatest of all, your health news. Congratulations across the board!
Love the photo in your header. Is that from a vacation?
Thanks, Staci. The photo isn’t one of mine, but one I found through Deposit Photos. I had a lot of unused credits. I also changed my website header background. I figured since my tagline is “Character-driven fiction/small town settings,” I needed my sites to reflect that.
Great news on all fronts, Joan! Love the cover, and I’m glad BMR might have nudged you a little to get this one published, lol.
You were just the motivation I needed. I appreciate it, Teri, and looking forward to appearing on BMR. It’s always fun.
So much to congratulate you on, Joan. Welcome back and I’m so glad your health is seeing improvements. Good news and I hope it gets better and better. And the book! What a great cover! I’m looking forward to the read. <3
Thank you so much, Diana. In a way, I needed this break, although I wouldn’t have chosen cancer to make me sit back and reflect for a while. Thanks for the comment on the cover. I was pleased with the job Get Covers did.
I hear you. Sometimes the only way I slow down is to get sick, and clearly that’s “not healthy.” I hope now that you’ve taken the time to sit back and reflect, your health will improve by leaps and bounds. <3
Thank you, Diana.
All good news, Joan. A lot of kudos to you for your accomplishments. The cover is beautiful and such good news about the cancer. Best wishes to you.
Thanks so much, John. I’m happy that I finally feel like writing again. (Or, at the least, editing.) π
I’ll bet it feels good. π
It does.

Exciting news, both on the writing front and the health front! I really like the starkness of the Blood Red Dawn cover.
Thank you, Liz. I wanted red for the cover, and I got it. π
You’re welcome, Joan.
Celebrating your every success!!
Thanks so much, Annette!
Wonderful news, Joan. I’m so happy for you. And I’m excited about Blood Red Dawn! The cover alone would have attracted me, but your blurb has me eagerly awaiting its release. πππ
I’m happy it intrigues you, Gwen. This one has been a long time in coming. Way overdue to publish.
Good to see you back again.
Thank you so much, Janet.
Itβs good to see you, Joan. Your cancer news is excellent and I am very thankful to hear it. A gorgeous book cover.
Thank you so much, Robbie. As I told Diana, I needed the break, but I would have picked a different reason to slow down if given the choice. Thanks for the comment about the cover.
Life doesn’t always oblige us. I have been dealing with illness in the family for 2 1/2 months. That’s how it goes sometimes, unfortunately.
I’m sorry to hear that, Robbie. Prayers for your family.
Thank you, Joan.
Congratulations on all fronts, Joan!! I can’t wait to re-read this story and how exciting that you got the inspiration for another one! π
Jan, your comments from the beta read were a great help. I hope you’ll enjoy the finished product.
I have no doubt I will!!
