Hey, everyone! Welcome to another in my series of full moon posts, recognizing the names of full moons given by Native Americans.
This month’s name is a favorite of mine because not only do I love summer, strawberries are absolutely my favorite fruit.

Interesting Facts
- The moon played a huge role in the D Day Invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, because of how it affected the tides. (A special thanks to Robbie Cheadle for this information.)
- The honeymoon is named after the full moon in June. Since it fell between the planting and harvesting of crops, this was traditionally the best month to get married.
- Other names for June’s full moon include the rose moon, egg-laying moon, and hatching moon.
- Full moons are sacred in Sri Lanka. Legend has it that Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and passing to nirvana occurred on full moons. On a full moon night, shops are closed, alcohol is not served, no sport matches can be played. Any killing—including fishing—is forbidden.
- The Summer Solstice occurred yesterday, June 20.
- This year’s Strawberry Moon is Thursday, June 24, making it the first full moon of summer.
Superstition
Superstitions about the moon’s evil influence made some people refuse to sleep in a place where moonbeams could touch them. In the 1200s, the English philosopher Roger Bacon wrote, “Many have died from not protecting themselves from the rays of the moon.”

I like the term strawberry moon:) I had no idea about the moon and Normandy. The moon has always affected me, including full moons. Another great moon post, Joan.
Normandy was news to me until Robbie mentioned it in another post. Fasctinating.

I’m lucky in that I am able to sleep. Sometimes my cat can’t (or doesn’t). When he’s awake, he wants everyone awake!
Egg-laying moon kind of makes me laugh. As does the “no killing” rule. Makes it sound like murder is legal at other times.

I have struggled to sleep when the moon is full, but it’s been a few years. I also had strawberries on a waffle for breakfast today.

That’s interesting about people being afraid to sleep lying in moonbeams in the past. I guess like black cats, the moon sometimes got a bad rap!

I enjoy your moon series, Joan. I never have a problem sleeping during the full moon. The beams even fall across me, so I think I am immune.
I must be too, John. The only time I ever have trouble sleeping during a full moon is when my cat is awake and thinks I should be also. 🙂

Intriguing idea of avoiding moon beams, I would think a full moon would have been welcome in the days when night meant total darkness.
You would think. People in the middle ages and later had some strange ideas.
